Samsung Electronics yesterday launched its latest innovation – the 108-megapixel (MP) Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX. As the world leader in advanced semiconductor technology proudly announced, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor in the industry that offers 100 million pixels, and more.
As reported on Samsung Newsroom, this move will increase its 0.8μm image sensor offerings from an already ultra-high of 64MP to 108MP. The resolution of this latest innovation is now comparable to that of a high-end DSLR camera, making ISOCELL Bright HMX as “a one-of-a-kind mobile image sensor”. And this latest innovation happened as a result of close collaboration with Xiaomi.
108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX Specs
According to Samsung, ISOCELL Bright HMX offers over 100 million effective pixels which enable it to produce extremely sharp photographs rich in details even in extreme lighting conditions. This first mobile image sensor will adopt a large 1/1.33-inch size and is able to absorb more light in low-lit settings compared to smaller sensors. The pixel-merging Tetracell technology enables the sensor to imitate big-pixel sensors which can produce brighter 27MP images.
The latest ISOCELL Bright HMX also introduces a new mechanism Smart-ISO which can intelligently select the level of amplifier gains depending on the illumination of the user’s current environment, adapting to ensure optimal light-to-electric signal conversion. It can easily switch to a low ISO to improve pixel saturation and produce vivid photographs. This also uses a high ISO during darker settings which can effectively help in reducing noise to shoot clearer pictures.
In addition, HMX supports video recording of up to 6K (6016 x 3384) 30-frames-per-second (fps) without losses in field-of-view at resolutions. This means people who are into advanced filming can make this an alternative instead of buying a new DSLR.
According to the report, the mass production of Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX will begin later this month.
“For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor. We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones,” said Lin Bin, co-founder and president of Xiaomi. “As we continue our partnership, we anticipate bringing not only new mobile camera experiences but also a platform through which our users can create unique content.”
“Samsung is continuously pushing for innovations in pixel and logic technologies to engineer our ISOCELL image sensors to capture the world as close to how our eyes perceive them,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology.”
